Empowering Health Advocacy: Dare to Embrace Uniqueness | Debi Wimberley | TEDxBergenCountyAcademies

advocacy endocannabinoid system (ecs) Jan 04, 2024

By Debi Wimberley, Certified Cannabis Educator and Founder of the Effective Cannabis Newsletter

In the summer of 2022, my ambition was to secure a TEDx platform to illuminate the pivotal role of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in one's health. Fast forward to September 14, 2023, when I found myself addressing students at TEDx Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey. Speaking to individuals aged 18 and under, an age group often overlooked in discussions about the ECS, presented a unique opportunity.

Despite age restrictions in most states preventing access to medical Cannabis until the age of 21, I recognized the profound importance of educating young minds about their ECS from the very beginning. Just as we learn about the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, understanding the ECS is fundamental to empowering the next generation to be their own health advocates.

The theme of the event was "Dare to Differ," and I seized this chance to share knowledge not typically covered in traditional science or biology classes. With the prevailing crisis of teenage depression and anxiety, my talk aimed to resonate with the students by recounting personal moments of darkness and how cannabinoid therapies became a lifeline, transforming my life into one filled with happiness.

This talk serves as a crucial introduction for kids under 18 to the essential role their ECS plays in their health and life. By educating them early on, we empower them to become advocates for their own health quality.

Importantly, the significance of this talk extends beyond age demographics. The ECS, a topic rarely discussed in mainstream education, is typically relegated to the Cannabis space. However, its impact on health is universal, making this talk relevant and enlightening for individuals of any age. It breaks free from the confines of specialized circles, reaching a broader audience who may not have encountered this essential information elsewhere. Daring to differ goes hand in hand with broadening our understanding of health, and this talk strives to be a beacon of knowledge for everyone, transcending age boundaries.

This talk is a call to action for individuals to become the guides of their own health, the advocates of their well-being, and the pioneers of their self-discovery. It serves as an empowering guide for anyone on a quest to improve their current health or overall well-being by seizing control of their health and developing their inner compass. This ultimately paves the way for a more authentic, and more fulfilling life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
